| Photo and caption by: The Panama Canal Company - Graphics Branch The Locks on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal are divided into two sets. The larger of the two sets, Miralfores Locks shown in the foreground of this aerial photo lowers a ship 54 feet in two steps. Across the small lake is the one step Locks at Pedro Miguel where a ship enters or leaves Gaillard Cut, the eight mile excavation across the continental divide. Two small ships in Miraflores being handled as one ship in the 1,000 foot long chamber presents a rather unusual sight. Click anywhere in image to return to the 1960's Photo Album. |
